Y.E.C. Editorial Guide

All content submitted to the Young Entrepreneur Council is eligible for syndication through our content partners and subject to editorial review. Here are some guidelines to keep in mind when submitting content:

  • Posts must be 800 words minimum.
  • Make sure your article provides practical and actionable tips or advice.
  • Start with a strong lede and establish context early on.
  • Avoid being overly self-promotional. There will be space for your to include links to your website. The real value for readers is always in what they can learn. It is fine you use your company as an example as long as you can also provide real information on what the results were.
  • Do not include any special formatting.
  • Please do not include any affiliate links, mention names of clients or partners or link to any questionable websites (e.g.: link farms, MFA, adult).

Here is a guide to the editorial review process:

Submit article. When you submit your article, set the status to “Pending Review.” Each day the editor will check for pending content and your article will be edited in the order it was received.

1st Round Edit. This is the development phase of the editorial process. The editor will review your article, make notes in the text and leave you a detailed editorial comment. You should receive two notices: one with the comment and one notifying you that your status of your article has been changed to “1st Round Edit.” If you do not receive any notices within seven days of submitting your content, please notify our editor, Kimberlee ([email protected]), and we will troubleshoot to ensure all lines of communication are working properly.

Revising. Article revisions should be submitted within seven days of receiving editorial comment notification. If you need additional guidance or have questions, don’t hesitate to contact the editor as she is here to help you develop your best content. Once your revisions are in, set the article status to “Pending Review” again. The editor will be notified and your article will move on to the final stages of editing.

2nd Round Edit. This is where the editor does the real polish and shine, editing for style, grammar and spelling, fine-tuning the headline and adding a brief description. Ideally all questions will have been answered during the revision stage, and the editor can schedule the post for publication. Prior to launch, any content that has gone through a complete editing cycle will be set to “Calendar Ready,” which means its ready to go and will be published when the site launches.

If there are additional questions from the editor at this point, your article status will be set to “Waiting for Feedback.” This notice should be addressed as promptly as possible, as it means your article is finished pending your response to some minor change or question. Once you’ve addressed the editor’s comments, set the status to “Pending Review.”

Ready to Go. Your article has been through a complete editing cycle and has been added to the editorial calendar and scheduled for publication (or set to “Calendar Ready” during pre-launch phase).
